Beware of wasps

Recently had issues with the Webasto heater - lots of smoke, but no heat. Changed fuel, flushed & cleaned system. Didn't consider checking air intake pipe but stumbled over a 6" solid blockage - monster wasp nest.

Should have known because a couple of years ago I was filling the TE water tanks and an almighty explosionare salting in a seriously fractured (beyond repair) water tank - water was dribbling in, never fill under pressure but a wasp nest in the overflow was the problem and it is amazing the subsequent pressure buildup.

All my overflows and air intakes are now protected with shade cloth held on with cable ties.

If you have wasps around your way this remedy may save a heap of grief.

Thanks for those tips Roger. We had heard of similar happening to the diesel heater air intake pipe. When our van was built recently Kedron put our intake in the boot which keeps a nice circulation over the batteries as it draws air into the boot from the side air vents. Also makes it a bit hard for those critters to get in there.

As for the exhaust for the diesel, we put an appropriately sized rubber stopper (used for the bottom of chair legs) over the end. Just have to remember to take it off before we turn the heater on.

Never thought of the water tank overflows though, so will get out there in the next couple of days and apply your shade cloth and cable tie solution.

Thanks again.

Greetings all.

We observed the same peski little critters entering our fridge vents many years ago.

We cut and glued fly screen to the inside of the vents.

A huge thanks for the tip, we have heaps of wasps back home - it hadn't even crossed my mind that they may think the various intakes and outlets of the Keddy are a great place to build nests etc. When we get home we will make sure to cover the appropriate places. :)
