Chevrolet Silverado

Recommended Posts

Hello Koggers,

The Chevrolet Silverado is gaining numbers as a tow vehicle for our Kedron vans.

I would like to add a second fuel filter to my Silverado. I have spoken to one diesel specialist who said that under the hood room is a problem. He also said that if the Isuzu motor has an electric fuel pump there is a problem in that the pump does not have sufficient grunt to pump the fuel through two filters.

I thought I would ask in this forum if any other Silverado owners have filled a second fuel filter?

Colin

Hi Colin,

What you are considering, I think is a very good idea & I certainly worth doing as I have done on this & previous vehicles.

Especially with today's Common Rail Diesels operating under VERY pressure with micro sized injection nozzles, they more prone to failure & expensive repair bills than older style systems. With regular servicing.....this is a MUST the possibility of a problem can be greatly reduced.

So the fitting of an extra filter can only be a benifit!!

Make sure it is fitted before the factory filter & I would suggest a filter with a rating of around 30 microns (your factory filter should have a rating of about 2 to 5 microns) so by fitting this secondary filter you could expect a longer service life from your factory filter. You will/should replace the secondary filter at approx 10k intervals & change your factory filter every 20k. The secondary filters (Stanadyne type) are relatively cheap compared to factory units & are easily sourced from a wide range of suppliers.

On the subject of the existing fuel pump not being able to 'pump' through an additional filter.....I will stand corrected......BUT I dont believe you will/should encounter ANY problems ONLY benefits!

Look for a filter that can separate solids & WATER

Here's a starting point for you.

Hello Colin..

this is my second silverado & i have fitted a 30 micron filter before the factory filter on both. i use te fuel master / stanadyne. they are the same but marketed under different names. these are a pretty good filter & hopefully get most of the dirt & any water . i change this filter every 10k. shop around at diesel/oil filter specialists or google. i think its a must have these days on any common rail diesel.

on this chev it sits up right next to the factory filter.

Hi Colin

Tony is right, I sent diesel care an email and asked them what I needed for my chev which was a filter head

and filter and some hose, The length of the hose depends where your original filter is mounted. I mounted

the new filter to the firewall. Part number for filter is 31863.

Hello,

I refer to Tony's comment.  Tony and Nev both recommend a pre-filter at 30 micron.  In the link Tony provides to Dieselcare they recommend a post filter at about 2 microns?  Any comment?

BTW, thank you all for your contributions.  I definitely will get a second filter fitted but Cairns is probably not the place to do it.

A point of interest to Silverado owners.  I have just done a 850 km return trip to Townsville from Cairns.  Fuel use was 13 L/100km including city driving in both places.  With a 130 litre tank capacity that gives me a range of 1,000 km.

Hi Colin,

In the link to Diesel Care I think the first example they show is a 'post' filter, but below that is an example of a setup showing the auxiliary filter as a 'pre' filter....definitely the way to go.

Best to have the higher' micron filter taking out all the 'big & wet' stuff first before it gets to the primary/factory filter.

I cannot see ANY benefit in putting a 2 micron filter AFTER the factory filter which will be about the same rating as the factory unit.

Cheers

As each passes its one day closer to an american truck sitting in my shed..........

Thanks Tony,

I sent an email to Diesel Care asking if they had a kit for the Silverado.  Their very prompt reply is below:

Hi Colin,

We do not have a bracket kit for the Silverado. However we can supply you with a filter and the fitting required to fit it up. You will just need to find a mounting point in the engine bay.

I am going to look into getting a bracket designed and fabricated.  Might not be easy here.  I reckon it should be quality stainless Steel.

Great news about your soon to be adopted baby, a GMC I believe!  You wont be sorry.

Hi Colin

I fitted my diesel care filter to firewall under bonnet on passenger side I used the mounting bracket

that mounted the filler neck of my adblue tank which I removed I will try and post a picture. Also since

photo I have changed both fuel filters according to truck computer which was saying I have 25% of use

left in them. I never let it go below 25%, but I always keep an eye on the glass bowl on bottom of Diesel

Care filter and drain every couple of weeks.

A bracket made out of mild steel & painted with a suitable product should suffice.....S/S bit of an overkill???

Kakadu's mounting looks OK

Hi all

It pays to shop around for filters. Our 100 series TD has had a Stanadyne pre-filter fitted for some years, and these are about $30 to replace. However, Maxiparts which stocks Donaldson filters has the same filter for about $21. Likewise, it has a "package" of air cleaner filter, oil filter and main fuel filter for the 100 series for about $78 all up. Toyota sells the oil filter alone for nearly $60.

Colin,

I have been looking at some of the US sites and if you go to http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/ or http://www.duramaxforum.com these guys have a wealth of information and ideas. From what I have read you need to buy a pump which has failsafe flow capability. That is if the powered lift pump fails, the vacuum lift can still pull the fuel through. A few options for you to look at and than talk with someone over here to see if they can match the specs. A kit I have looked at are Kennedy Filter and pump kit, not cheap at about $700 US i think + freight and customs.

cheers

Hi Bryan,

Viewing US websites changing/adding a Fass fuel pump seems to be a very common ‘upgrade’.

Are you personally experiencing fuel starvation problems?

My truck is 6/15 built with the LML engine, to date I don’t believe I have encountered fuel supply problems, my engine is 100% stock other than an ECU remap, which definitely has has increased kw’s and torque, but I’m not experiencing flat spots or hunting normally associated with lack of fuel.

What are your reasons for the Fass ‘upgrade’?

I have had very good support and assistance from www.dmaxstore.com

Very interested to hear of your reasons.

Cheers and beers

,Hi Tony

I have had a starting issue on 3 occasions, when the engine started it ran for about 30 seconds and stopped, then would not start again until I primed it at the filter.

I have checked for leaks in the system but none are evident and I read an article (and now can’t find it) that referred to a valve in the in tank pickup system that relieves the pressure when the engine is shut down.

From memory, I believe it stated that if that valve is faulty it will allow all the fuel in the line to drain back to the tank.

I was planning to fit a second filter and the major holdup was the location and lingering in the back of my mind was the fact I would still have to remove the wheel and inner guard to access the initial filter.

The installation of the Fass system will (I hope) eliminate all the issues.

Cheers

Bryan

Hi Bryan,

Just to add a bit of confusion to this matter. ................ sorry

When I first purchased my GMC, it did the same thing (Or so it sounds). I rang Victorian American Auto's who did the conversion and they told me it was a common problem with a main fuse (a big square one). They got me to swap one out until I could get to a Holden dealer. However in the meantime they sent me 2 (only required 1) and I replaced it and it has been perfect ever since.

This may not be the same issue but it does sound very similar

Cheers

Steve

Ha ha, just add a bit more confusion.......

on American forums I seem to remember reading about your symptoms Bryan, the seal on the primer unit on top of the fuel filter does leak (vacuum) causing the problems you are alluding to. I believe there is a service kit available to remedy this, Possibly (only) available from the US.

Do you have any reputable diesel workshops in your vicinity that could assist?

I  personally.....just have a problem with you investing in a lift (Fass) pump and installation and still having the same problem.

Following up on Steve’s comments above.....to me ( for what it’s worth) your problem is not electrical .....as you can reprime the system and all is OK

Please let us know of your progress.

Cheers

I agree wholeheartedly   Steve after posting the pic and checking it out I cleaned it up the next day I must have been very  lazy

at the time because I always  keep the truck clean inside and out.

Hi Tony

Thanks for the heads up on the primer seal, I have ordered a seal kit and will install it when I fit the fuel filter delete.

My aim is to have two filters that I can access easily and do away with the original filter by fitting a FASS fuel air separator with a complete fuel sump kit and a Duramax fuel filter delete.

This video is worth a look.

Hi Bryan,

Were you able to source the seal kit locally?

If so, name of supplier and cost if possible please?

My vehicle is still under warranty, so I’m not going to delete the original filter (which is a bit of a bugger to change) at this stage.

Being a common rail design motor (as is yours) the fuel must be ‘cleaner than clean’. I have added an additional filter assembly (see photo) as a pre filter to the factory unit......this works for me. It has a clear bowl on it to check for any water in the system.

When and if I do upgrade my filtration, I will probably fit an adapter plate to the existing filter head and fit a CAT IR-0750 which is available from the DMAX store for a little over AU$100. The CAT filters are two micron (same as AC Deleo -factory). The CAT filters are very common, easy to source and a fraction of the price of AC Delco.

Last thing in the world, I’m trying to convey to you..... is tell you what to do with YOUR OWN truck!

But to me, in your case fitting a Fass type pump is an overkill for what you are trying to achieve.

One thing to to consider/remember is with the Fass type system setup the filters hang lower than the chassis rail and could possibly be prone to stone or other debris damage, flicked up from the N/S front wheel.

Cheers and keen to hear of your progress!

Tony

I found with my dodge ram I could bolt a fuel pump and filter up to one of the cross members which were under the tub which I removed and put a intergrated concept canopy on, this works well.
