Computer Internet Security

I'm assessing my internet security needs for 2009, and looking at reviews of the major products. ie Windows Live OneCare, Norton Internet Security 2009 etc, etc, etc.

For those people who rely on their computer and internet connection, what are you using and how well does it perform? I currently have OneCare installed, but want to make sure that it's the right way to go.

Hi Lea,

All you really need is Windows automatic updates turned on, Windows Firewall always turned on, a reputable anti-virus program that is updated regularly and your brain. Scanning with a freeware "Malware" package periodically can help too. Any web browser other that Internet Explorer is an advantage as well.

I had an IT business for many years and can honestly say that I have managed to avoid the "gremlins" by just following the above. I get by with a free anti-virus program called AVG.

They key is to be fussy about the emails you open, to whom you give your email address, what details you enter into online forms and what websites you visit. And....it is not as difficult as it sounds.

Norton Internet Security had a shocking reputation in the past for bringing computers to their knees by slowing them down dramatically. They (Symantec/Norton) have been advertising recently that they have overcome these problems but I'm not convinced.

As for Microsoft's offerings, I just can't bring myself to give them any money. It is bad enough that they charge so much for their Windows operating systems, which by the way, are the reason that we need all of these security measures......

Go minimal, but be smart. That would be my advice.

Cheers

Russ.
