  4. Alice Springs is busy

    It seems that Alice Springs, which is generally a busy town at this time of year, is particularly busy this year. In part that is attributed to the forthcoming closure of climbing The Rock at Uluru. 

     

    I make no comment on the closure of climbing at Uluru, but rather the need to plan ahead if Alice Springs is on the travel agenda. And apparently it will get even busier in the near future...

     

    And please, no debate on the merits of climbing The Rock....it will only lead to tears.😁

    This post made me laugh!  I can imagine how you would feel opening a van to scenes of disaster...   I remember in our first van, a Kedron ATV with sliding window over the couch, I left the window open by mistake on the Gibb River Road.  Red dust everywhere.  But that was MY error, not the van’s.

    Those who have ordered the replacement light covers will have received emailed advice from Fairlite to say the orders are being despatched.

     

    They also say that :

     

    " We will be processing more orders as numbers fill again.. so tell a friend !"

     

    So, if you missed out on this round, there will be a further chance to order the covers.

    The first production line of lens covers is now closed.  Fairlite are however now taking orders for the second production run, but until they have enough orders to make it financially viable , there is no estimate of when that might be.

     

    So, if you still need a lens cover (or two) you can still order them from Gemma at Fairlite, but it could take a while.

     

    We are extremely grateful to Grant Foster for making all these arrangements on our behalf.

    Hi forumites.

    Some of you may know that Grant Foster on the Kedron Facebook sister site has arranged for replacement external light covers on Kedron vans to be made by a firm called Fairlite Plastics.  This is a special run and may not be available in future. 

     

    While the orders were to be placed by today at the latest, I have spoken to Fairlite Plastics (Gemma) and she advised that provided she receives requests as soon as possible, but within the next week, she should be able to accommodate the request.  I have only just noticed the facebook post on this topic and so apologies for short notice.  I know not everyone is a facebook user and so may miss out on this opportunity otherwise.

     

    The facebook post says:

     

    Price will $62.50 each.

    Gemma will arrange your payment, the number of covers you want to order and your postal address.

    Welcome to the forum Ian.  You would be choosing one of Australia’s best vans if you choose a Kedron.  The vans are super strong and reliable, and the Gall Boys are such wonderful people to deal with.  Let us know how you go with the purchasing of a new van.

  16. A great little Eyre Peninsula caravan park

    Inland about 35 kms from Tumby Bay SA is the lovely little town of Cummins.  This town has a wide range of facilities, ranging from an IGA supermarket, a butchers, takeaway, a hardware store, a mechanical workshop, hairdresser, bakery (oh what a bakery!) and a great caravan park.

     

    It is fairly small (I think only about 10 or so powered sites) but heaps of room for unpowered sites.  Some of the sites are on lovely fresh green grass, even at this time of year at end of Summer.  And I think the washing machine is free, but don’t quote me on that.

     

    Pay for six nights and stay seven, at $25 a night for a powered site.  A tip...#8 is the best spot.  Which we are on!

    Peter and Margaret have hit the nail squarely on the head.  Upgrading for us was about being confident we are legal!  We can now carry more in both van and 200 series LC but will try very hard not to have those weights.?

     

    And welcome to the forum David and Liz.  Tell us a bit more about yourself too, if you are comfortable doing that.  Which part of the country are you from?

  19. Best Generator to take on Kimberly's Trip?

    The smaller one is of course adequate if all you need is to recharge batteries.  

     

    We found that the Kimberley area can get hot during the day in Summer but not so much in the Winter months.

     

    Peter (ATV42) says he would prefer to go to a caravan park for air conditioning if it is hot.  That is well and good if a caravan park is available :)    The times we have used a generator for cooling has been either on a very remote road, camped up after a day’s travelling, and only needing cooling for a couple of hours until the sun sets, or say crossing the Nullarbor.  Recently we pulled into a delightful camp off the Nullarbor and at 2pm it was nearly 40 degrees.  We ran the aircon until 4pm when a cool breeze came up.

     

    Even if a caravan park was available we would much prefer that lovely bush camp anyway, despite needing a generator for a couple of hours.  And much cheaper to run a generator for two hours than paying for a caravan park for a night.  Plus the attendant nuisance value of booking in, unhitching etc.  

     

    The generator gives you options.

  20. Best Generator to take on Kimberly's Trip?

    We have the Yamaha 2.4 Kia and find it is reliable and competent.  Do you need it?  We have just finished a 12 month tour through Vic, NSW, QLD, WA and SA, and had to use the generator about five or six times for air conditioning.  It was baking hot at times and the cooling made all the world of difference.  Obviously it is helpful to have a means to recharge the batteries if you have days of overcast conditions.

    And we have just spent four days at Shannon NP, South of Bridgetown.  Lovely area of forest and ferns.  The camping area has a new area with large and open sites on terraced areas on a gentle slope, and an older area among the trees.  We chose the middle ground, near trees and vegetation but out in the open for solar panels.  Hot showers and flushing toilets nearby.

  24. Taking the Plunge

    Welcome Peter and Rommey!  It is good to see you join the Ked ron family.

    We also live in SA (we are up in the Barossa Valley) so we may join up with you sometime, in your nice, shiny and new van.

     

    When we drove up to QLD to pick up our new van we went up the most direct route (through Mildura, Hay etc) but came back via a meandering route through NSW and Victoria.  And how exciting it is to plan a trip with a brand new Kedron.

     

    I made a list of all the things we would need in the new van, which was divided into two parts ; those items I could take from home, and those which would have to be purchased new in Brisbane.  This was things like tea towels, cutlery, pots and pans, sheets and towels etc.  I found it very helpful to have that list.  Still have it on the computer somewhere....

  25. Wonderful campground at WA national park.

    We are camped in the South West Of WA, just South of Margaret River, in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.  The campground is called Jarrahdene.  This is a drop dead gorgeous spot, set among flowering banksias and vines and ferns.  Quite a few of the sites fit a good sized caravan and we have a nice big site with the usual wooden table and chairs and fireplace.  Nearby are toilets and a covered kitchen with gas barbeque, and a dump point.  And both Margaret River township and Augusta are short drives away.

     

    Equally important, we have reasonable phone and internet reception.

     

    The only problem for some of our brethren is that it being a national park they do not allow dogs.

     

    I feel so lucky to be in such a lovely spot.
