Tanami Desert Road September 2014

Hi Koggers,

The GRR was in great condition, Kalumburu road was a little bumpy, but the Mitchell falls road was ordinary but doable.

We loved our time at Middle Lagoon (near Cape Leveque), we caught up with Chris & Lyn & their TE. Great spot ..... worth a week or two !

We are leaving Broome tomorrow morning and making our way to Halls Creek. Does anyone know of the condition of the Tanami Desert Road ? We have heard conflicting reports ...

While I know nothing, I usually find the ExploreOz forum to be a fount of knowledge on all things remote. Have a look over there. See http://m.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/108253/Halls_Creek_to_Wolfe_Creek_Crater-Tanami_Road_conditions.aspx

Hi Taka we were in Broome a month ago.

Did not do the Tanami ourselves however spoke to a couple with 13 year old Bushtracker who had some issues with a broken spring and micro way falling from its perch. He informed me that he should have changed his springs before he left home but ran out of time. A mate of mine with a new Trackmaster Pilbara used the Tanami a couple of week later and besides what appeared to be some minor issues with foam movement under panels and a considerable amount of dust inside got through ok. These issues will be addressed by Trackmaster once he returns home to Victoria as the van is a new model for them and they are keen to get things right. Hope this information is of some help to you

Warm Regards

John

Hi Koggers,

Update on the Tanami.

The road was easy. The first 50kms from Halls creek was a little rough but still able to drive at 60-70kmph. Around the border and down to Floodout Creek was a dream.

Bililuna & Yuendumu were a mess & not worth going into.

We only suffered one flat. We were lucky enough to catch up to Ernie & Margaret from Queensland in Tilmouth who have a new TE & 70 series. The road is doable over two big days of 500km each.

The Tanami was a road we always wanted to complete and driving into the west Mac ranges was awesome and worth every corrugation. Camping was a dream with heaps of gravel pits off the road. We saw 9 ford falcons driven at light speed & three road trains. We counted 51 rolled cars, so be careful. Most of the road is 40m across & with a small amount of cattle.

Regards Taka

You didn't go into Balgo & have a look at the art gallery???? you missed something special :(

Billi has a lot to offer also if you 'scratch just below the surface' Did you go to Wolfe Creek Crater??? Did you stop @ Tanami Gold & do a tour???

Happy to hear you had a trouble free trip, except for the flat.
