79 series GX ute as tow vehicle for our Top Ender

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone else is has the 79 series ute as a tow vehicle and would you be interested in sharing your modifications you have done to your ute.

We just pick our up, so far we are very impressed how it drives, however, we did try and hook our van up only to find the WDS we currently have is not compatable with the ute because of the lift it has, so we are having to purchase a longer hitch and heavy WDS to accomodate the height of the truck.

We are fitting the new hitch this week and then hopefully (fingers crossed) we can see how the cruiser will perform towing.

Would love to hear what modifications people have done to make their vehicle more comfortable and compatable for towing.

Our list so far:

Dual battery system

12000lb winch

rear heavy duty air bag suspension

on board compressor

4 in lift

3" exhaust

looks like we have a oil cooler fitted for the gear box ?? not sure but thats what it looks like

Clearview mirrors Thanks Tony H

Cab roof Rack

Light bars and HID spotties

HID upgrade to headlights

6 start Electronic rust prevention

electric brakes

Roof console

UHF radio

Soon to add

Remote Central Locking

Reversing Camera

Pyro and boost gauges

In cab air controller for airbags

Maybe, change the passenger seat from 3/4 to Bucket

Canopy

Fridge slides for 2 40L engels

canopy battery and solar setup for charging

and a partridge in a pear tree.......

Look forward to hearing your feedback.

Regards

Hi Andy & Di,

We have a 79 single cab GXL & a XC3. We travelled around the Top End for six months last year and certainly had problems with both vehicle & van.

Please contact me 0400332499 , I would be happy to offer our experience.

Regards Clive & Jude

Hello Andy & Di..

we towed our atv with a GXL for a couple of years. I spent quite a bit of $$ to it to make it a good tow vehicle but it never was all that good. used to run all over the road on roads that were not perfect.anthing over 90KPH was a bit dangerous. found it very cramped in the cab with very little leg/foot room.

best thing i ever did was sell it & bought the chev.

cheers Danny
