Rick and I traversed the Great Central from west to east a couple of years ago without any problems - but conditions can change from day to day - depending on the weather particularly. What is one day a smooth (ish!) dirt road can turn to a muddy slurry with the addition of some rain! Before setting out on such a trip, a good read through the following Main Roads web sites will help by giving current and future road-works, as well as those roads which are currently closed for one reason or another. These are both official government sites (and that's all I'm going to say about that!) Another way of checking is to contact the communities that lie along the Great Central. Locals can be a great resource. Don't forget to get the relevant permits as well. We also got a lot of really good information from the Great Central Road site WA Road Conditions NT Road Conditions Travel safely and don't forget to put up a trip report when you get back.
