Trip to Tassie next year

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We are thinking of taking the van (Top Ender 21'6") over to Tassie for a few weeks next year in October.

We were down there many years ago with only a hire car and remember some of the roads were quite narrow.

Has anyone done this trip with the van?

Are there many van parks and what about free camping?

Have not looked into the cost to get the car and van over there yet, so this might be a decider not to take the van.

Regards

Rob

It is expensive to take the van and car over.  They charge by the combined length.  You don't spend a lot on fuel over there as everything is so close. However, it is worth it to have your own accommodation.  I would suggest a minimum of six weeks. There is plenty of free/low cost/ pub camping.  Yes, some of the secondary roads are narrow.  We based ourselves in an area and explored with the car.

Quite a few members of the group have been over, and I know a few that are intending to go next year.  You won't regret it.

We have done two tours of Tassie.  First one for three months Feb to May - not long enough.  Next from Nov to well June as it turns out (COVID).  It is expensive to get van and car that size over approx $1,800 to $2,000 return.  Not sure what the new prices would be from Geelong though.  Secondary Roads are narrow and you have to be organised to do as Sandra suggested, drop van and venture out but worth the trouble.  Not sure of the state of free camps and National Parks since COVID.  Some were still closed when we left in June 2020.

We had a great time, and only missed the West Coast due to stupid fridge (fixed in Penguin).  Went for another try and got as far as Waratah but snowing in December so gave it a miss.

Certainly not a trip you would regret, you just need to make sure you book far enough out and have your return trip booked.  Doesn't mean you can't move it, but if it gets busy and you haven't booked your return trip you have no hope of getting home.  We prefer going during day on way over and night on way back.  That was when you docked in Melbourne, presume it will be easier at new Geelong facility.

We loved touring Tassie with our van.  I posted trip reports here, (in 2018) so you might do a search in case you find it interesting or helpful.

We have had our van there now three times, last ime we stayed for just over 3 months, next time thinking about 6 months.

Yes it is costly on the ferry…..but the longer you can stay the more justification you can get on the charges.

The costs are FAR OUTWAYED but the shear delights you will see & experience.

Do consider staying more ‘than a few weeks’

Have a great time, travel safe ,

We are leaving in January for 3 months with our van , as an idea of costs , trip across is costing us $1214.00 for 2 adults , 1 twin bed Porthole , 2 x passengers private cabin ( Night Trip Across ) for a total length of car and van of 13.3 m . Return trip is $952.00 with 2 Recliner Chairs booked ( Day return Trip )  . We are hoping that 3 months will be enough . Also purchased a National Parks Pass for 12 months at a cost of $ 36.55 with  seniors  Discount .

  • 4 months later...

Yep. As above. Stay longer if at all possible. Tassie is our favourite place on the planet.

Couple of small suggestions:

If you're thinking of the west coast, which is beautiful, check your rig dimensions and the size limits on the Corinna Ferry - see their website: https://www.corinna.com.au/barge-access-and-times. We can't fit on the ferry with our 18'6" ATV.

Secondly, if you're taking the Lyell Highway towards Queenstown, take your time over the steep, windy narrow hill at, I think it's Gormanston. If you've got a UHF, I'd call up and check if there's any heavy vehicles coming over the hill before you proceed.

Have a great trip!
