  1. John,

Some pics on how to remove LED lamp sets.

The Sikaflex used when fitting the lamp sets, and mentioned in this thread, does "glue" the lamp into position which can mean a fair bit of force is required to prise the lamp off the back of the van. There is a real risk of chipping the surround. My recomendation is dont take this on unless you have to - when your lamp is blown you have to.

The procedure is in essence to unlock ramped tabs which hold the lamp in the surround. The only thing I have not shown here is the use of a second screwdriver to help prise the lamp out of the surround - required when the Sikaflex has a hold of it.

    Thanks Grahame

That is essentially what I was trying to do but I recon mine are well and truly stuck.

I dread to think what mess is behind mine considering the amount of muck that came out when washing after dirt road runs.

I have now sealed the black surrounds and lenses with silicon so will just wait for a failure before doing anything else.

    Cheers

  2. Hi Trish & Carl

I am using a Navig8r M43 with OziExplorer plus Hema maps installed.

Once set-up properly and the Hema maps converted to suit I can travel all over the country and the maps automatically change to the area you are in. Special maps such as desert tracks can be selected as required.

You have to buy and install the Ozi & Hema maps.

The original City maps, which come with the M43, have updates available free of charge.

Have a look here http://www.navig8r.com.au/ for the new models.

    Cheers

  3. Hi Ian & Jill

    Why upgrade your TV?

We have carried an ordinary set top box attached to our Conia TV for 2 years which not only picked up digital programmes but in analogue areas also produced a far better picture than the direct signal connection to the TV.

It is a bit of "spaghetti" wiring with the sat box as well.

    Cheers

  4. And here lies the sole reason Silicone is being used on our roofs instead of Sikaflex.

Imagine if you had trouble with your airconditioner and it had to come out and Sikaflex had been used.

I understood the panel sealing on my XC2 was Sikaflex and the aircon sealing looks to be the same stuff.

Guess I will find out if the aircon has to come out.

  5. An LED Stop/Tail, Indicator Story

When I saw light truck LED lamps being installed on our Kedron I was very pleased - well, I thought, there's something I will not have to concern myself with for the life of the van. Not so folks - don't take them for granted.

One needs a flat bladed screwdriver to lever the surround away from the lamp and move the lamp outwards, it will then hang on its wires.

    Any comments?

    Grahame

    Hi Grahame

I have been concerned about ours for another reason ever since our first red dirt run 3 years ago because of the amount of muck that washes out from behind them and never appears to end when cleaning the van.

I have tried to get them off but not continued for fear of breaking them.

Exactly what is the technique with the screw driver as although it has been described over the phone by Kedron it does appear risky without knowing the technique.

Any chance of a photo of where exactly to use the screw driver?

    Cheers

  6. Good evening all,

Went to grease the bearings today and discovered that one of the studs on one of the hubs was spinning. I was unable to separate the wheel from the hub of course. Has anyone had one of these repaired? Hope I can.

I had to replace 3 broken studs in the first year and found 2 types of splined studs, the originals were small splines and the replacements were coarse splines and slightly larger diameter at the hub fixing point. You may find the coarse ones are big enough to solve your problem of stud spinning.

On the same topic, what is the best way to remove the seal from the back of the hub? Destroy it? Or can they be removed without damaging it? And how? Seems pretty tight.

For the sake of the cost of a seal why bother to save it? It is however possible to get them out without damage with either a suitable seal puller or very careful tapping with a flat punch from the outer side of the hub.

Thanks guys and gals, oh........Happy Easter

    This a repeat testpost

  7. Hi Danny

We have the same problem which I think is something to do with a connection to the back of the rubber antenna as often just swinging it around gets better reception. I just have not looked further of how to remove the antenna and replace it with something better, but will be soon.

  8. Hi Dick

My 17ft XC2 fully loaded weighs 3100kg and I am sure many others would carry more stuff than we do.

You must ensure the plate weights are backed up by weigh bridge certification.

Ours is front Kitchen to take advantage of the extra area over the boot, single beds and rear shower/toilet which provided the maximum living area that is still quite tight.

Single beds also allow for maximum overhead storage cupboards.

  9. Hi Reg & Fran

I can't picture the arrangement of your step, how does your step differ from the one shown on the Kedron web site?

My XC2 has the same arrangement as the Top Ender on the Kedron web site except it is a front door.

The step is bolted to the footwell/step in the van which is a welded aluminium chequer plate box bolted to chassis steelwork extensions.

Judging by the battering the step arms have taken being rather bent this arrangement is solid.

    Cheers

  10. Hi XC2 owners

Have you noticed in the photos of the XC2 featuring in issue 153 Caravan and Motorhome that it appeared to be riding high on the suspension.

I have just taken a close look at the aluminium cladding around the wheel arch and I count 10 spaces of markings up the side of the wheel arch.

My XC2 has 8 spaces of aluminium markings up the wheel arch.

Who has the low and who has the high wheel arch as it makes a big difference to what happens to the wheel guards.

    Take care

    28/2/11

I had a call from David at Kedron today explaining the developments they have done to the XC2 suspension since mine was built and they are quite extensive which should eliminate any suspension problems I encountered on my early model.

They also have quite a lot of other mods in the pipeline for all models.

  11. Hi Rousosm

What ever you buy get the delivery weight (may or not be the Tare weight) certified on a weighbridge before you take delivery.

My XC2 17 ft inside was plated at 2250kg Tare & 2750kg ATM.

I have not weighed it empty but did weigh it loaded with all extra load weights checked or estimated fairly accurately including extras to the standard XC2 van fitted by Kedron and the result was a shock.

The ATM was 3100kg, GTM 2840kg.

When I was considering which model to buy Kedron advised the same sized ATV would probably be 300kg heavier than the XC2.

My guess is that your ATV will certainly be pushing 3500kg and a 21ft would be over when loaded for a longish tour.

Talk to Kedron about actual weights of vans and be certain about the topic.

    Best of luck

  12. I had a similar problem which also included the fridge running a very long time without cycling off. The problem was solved by opening the outside access door to the fridge and giving the wiring connections a tweak and spray of WD40 type stuff.

On hot days the fridge thermostat will also need turning up to max and leaving the access door open improves ventilation to the tiny condenser which also may need de-dusting if you have done much dirt road driving.

    Hope this helps.

  13. Alan we had ordered a Air Command Cormorant to be fitted when we designed our van April 2009, only to be totally disappointed June 2009 too find they fitted a pathetic aircon same as what you have.

It never worked efficiently even when parked in the shed, we have a 21' interior size van the pathetic aircon could only get it down to 28 degrees.

Toatally frustrated having it looked at time and time again, we took it back to Kedron after 6 months Tom basically said "too bad so sad"

We threw the pathetic away and fitted a Air Command as we had ordered in the first place.

Happy! Happy! Happy, works a treat.

Bloody fantastic, you will not be sorry.

  14. Phil

Are your pumps floor mounted or as my Kedron was 1 on the floor and 1 on a wall which was extremely noisy?

I have fixed a foam block on the floor and the pumps fixed to the top of the block but holding screws do not go through to the floor.

The second mod is to lengthen the hoses so that they are flexible between the holes in the floor and the pumps, loops are ideal.

Doing this has reduced the vibration noise considerably.

    Cheers John

  15. Hi Everyone,

We are currently in Kakadu NP and in a few days hope to travel from Daly Waters to Cape Crawford then up to Borroloola. Then along the Savannah Way to Burketown and Normanton then up the Burke Developmental Road to Chillagoe and into Mareeba.

Since leaving home on 20th June we have heard all sorts of stories about washouts etc on the Savannah Way and are wondering if anyone has travelled along there recently and can provide an up to date condition report.

    HI Mayzee

We drove the Savannah Way on in June and crossed the Calvert River on 13th June which was then the only major obstacle. There were plenty of washouts and tricky looking creek crossings. The roughest section was Hells gate towards the Calvert which we had to do rather slowly.

We were lucky crossing the Calvert as 2 days earlier another 21' Kedron owner together with 6 others spent a day clearing a path across the Calvert which if it is the same you will take a path keeping to the left in a curve to the left of a rock near the middle of the crossing.

    Have fun

  16. Hi

It would be beneficial to know what load rating the springs are and the actual weight of your van.

Some off road camper trailer manufacturers have no idea as they fit up 1200kg springs for one that's plated max 750kg and the owners wonder why it bounces around

    Cheers

    Darryl

    Springs 8 leaf x 60 mm x 6 mm rated at 1800 - 2000kg per side pair by AL-KO

Van weight at the time of measurement about 2700kg, ie full tanks but no personal stuff and food,

    Weigh bridge GTM 2830kg

    Plate rating of axles 2 x 2600kg.

    Cheers

    John

  17. At a little over 2/12 yrs and about 30,000km old the springs on my XC2 AL-KO rocker roller suspension have deflections nearly twice that quoted by AL-KO for the load involved.

The problem the sagging springs caused was for the tyres to hit the wheel guards bending them and splitting the seals against the wheel arches/walls.

Has anyone else experienced this excessive sagging springs problem on not very old vans?

As a result of complete indifference by AL-KO who say that is about what to normally expect I have now ordered a new Australian made suspension from SA that will fit straight on to the existing mountings.

I have received comments about tests that have been carried out on AL-KO springs and mounting bolts that are not good.

Kedron have been kept fully informed with details and photographs of the problem offering their assistance if needed and have endorsed my decision.

    Cheers

  18. Good point John.

Our XC 16'6" shower van was ordered in early 2005 with a promised tare weight of 2150kg.

When we went to the factory to pick it up in August 2005 the tare was 2345kg's.

The stated reason for this massive increase was that they had decided to put the beastie on an ATV chassis.

    Rod & Mavis

That's not a massive increase. My 17ft XC2 was plated at 2250Kg Tare & 2750Kg ATM which suited the Terracan I had at the time of purchase.

How ever when I filled al tanks and weight equal to about the 500Kg load allowance then weighed it the ATM was 3100Kg.

Kedron supplied a new plate and I got the van registration details amended in WA.

I now consider the extra weight a blessing as maybe there is a lot of extra strength somewhere that allowed me to do my recent trip without any significant problems.

I believe all caravans sold new or used should have a weigh bridge certified weight.

    Cheers

  19. Ray

I drove through Pt Hedland today towing my XC2 on my way home after completing a fairly long outback run.

The route was Gt Central road Leonora to Alice Springs, Plenty and Donohue Hwys to Boulia, Birdsville, Longreach, Normanton, Savannah Way to Boroloola, including crossing the Calvert river thanks to a Kedron owner and 6 others who cleared most big rocks 2 days earlier in their west east run, then finished off with the Gibb river road.

We had no significant problems and no flat tyres.

My tow car is a 3ltr Patrol running on OE Bridgestone 693's which pulls the 3.1t van with ease.

I will be leaving the Harding river caravan site on Wednesday morning.

Your Navara should pull the XC ok but do bear in mind that any XC's built earlier than 2007 are a different build spec to the current XC2 as some were built as effectively ATV's.

    Cheers

    John

  20. Wouldnt I like to be up there in the next few months and see the transformation from last year to this year would blow you away.

But I'm guessing that the rds are very damaged and wouldnt be possible anyway???

    Hi Kimbo

If your comment is right I had better think again about setting out on the Outback Way towards QLD in 5 weeks heading for Birdsville then the Savannah Way

Anyone got a road conditions glass ball?

    Cheers
