We are CMCA members and have only just heard of this in the last couple of months.
Some fellow caravaners have used this service and also saved a significant amount on their insurances.
Likewise our CIL van insurance last year was $1550 and the tug was with APIA and around $600.
Lumley Insurance also has quoted us $1600 for both.They insure most CMCA member Motor homes and 5th wheelers so should be a strong company.Apparently you need to insure both van and car to take advantage of their insurance.
Guess where we are going, $600 saving P.A. can not be sneezed at.
On a not so lighter note, please don't tell us about the fishing. We are stuck at home in Brissie and don't need to know.

Greetings all.
Thought I would share a great little idea initiated by one of our camping friends.
This marvellous invention can prevent damage to the cranium when the awning arms are left hooked up to the van and the awning is extended.
It is cheap and very practical and there is no need for expensive padding.
It was a little hard to find a name for this but apparently "duck" came to mind for some reason.
We thank you Mal & Kerry (Sellinup)you are genius material.

Hope you have a snorkel,it has not stopped raining on the Sunshine Coast for the last 4 days.
We are house sitting at Bellmere near Caboolture 230mm so far in 4 days and it is still coming down
Lucky the van is amphibious grin.

Well done good site the pop off screen is great (as fitted to our new vent)recommend it to all as a mod to the old ones.
Cleaning is still tedious and finicky for the fan blade but well worth it.
Our new vent also has the rain sensing option where it closes by itself when it senses rain.
Great while you are not in the van sleeping but not soooo good while you are sleeping and it rains! Makes heaps of noise closing and opening.
It is a great feature as you can leave the van with ventilation knowing that if it rains you are safe from a wet floor.

Hi all.
Great advice from Tony.
Leave the water heater off and full (unless you expect freezing conditions
). Water tanks full and 240v hooked up your battery charger should keep the batteries in tip top condition ready for the next adventure.We always left our fridge running as well (unless defrosting) in out XC and we had 7 years faithful service from it.
Another little snippet of advice. Make sure that you exercise all components on the rig at least once a month if you can. Run the aircon turn the water heater on, diesel heater if you have it, flush the toilet and make sure that you have oiled all the rubbers on the toilet cassette.Use the SOG if fitted, Run some water through the taps using the pumps and any other items fitted should be exercised.
The old saying "use it or loose it" definitely applies to caravan components.

I have just been flicking through some of the posts on the open forum and the Members forum.
What a wealth of information we have gathered here.
Thanks to all that have participated and I have to tell you all that your contributions have made this a good place to look for info and friendship.
Please keep it up friends. Ask your questions no matter how silly or not quite right you may think they are. There is no criticism here only help that hopefully some other member may be able to assist with.
If ya not much good at typing you are forgiven we are all deficient in some way,without spell check I am lost.
The beauty of this site is that it is not too big and it is peculiarly Kedron (apart from a few defectors that still love the site
) Post you blokes and ladies. Keep the site active and informative.Bring up all the questions that you have.
Please pardon my late night ramblings but I do love this site very much and when you are stuck at home in Brisbane there is not much else to do but post post post

It takes a little while for it to download but it will then appear above the "Choose File" button.

We just received a note from a good friend Dave Allen who owns a winery (plug coming
Rangemore Estate with B&B & camping) here in Queensland. It is a post that has been sent to a lot of tourism organisations here.It is an interesting read and had we not organised our New Years eve gathering at Jondarian Woolshed we most certainly would have spent the festive season at the Pub.
We have free camped here before and it is a great spot. Well worth considering if you are passing through this area.
If we are in town next year we will certainly post this as a gathering so keep it in mind.

Nindigully is a very small country town consisting of five (yes 5) dedicated hard working people, the pub plus 3 houses.
Our nearest town is St George app 45 kilometers away. Goondiwindi, Moree and Roma are 2 hours away , 4 hours will get you to Toowoomba, Dalby , Armidale or Bourke. Brisbane , Gold and Sunshine Coasts , Emerald and Tamworth are app 6 hours easy drive. There are plenty of beautiful motels in St George to accomodate several hundred people.
The Gully is a family owned (since Aug 2002) and operated country pub that does rely heavily on tourism and particularly on the success of its events.
The benefits of our events do flow thru to the surrounding communities as people travel from many places and spend along the way and their return home at service stations ,
other pubs and general stores. The importance of tourism to the bush is immense and integral to our survival. We strive here at Nindigully to make every person who visits a friend for life...as our town entry signage says "come as a stranger, leave as a friend".
Our claims to fame are....the oldest continually licensed hotel (pub) in Queensland (licensed 1864) still in its original location and position on the banks of the beautiful Moonie River. Voted in 2011 by CNN (CNNGO.COM) Australias No1 Outback Pub....Voted Australias best country pub by 4x4 Australia magazine in late 2006.
Winner of the Balonne Shire buisness of the year in 2006. Recently we have received notoriety for building Australias Biggest Burgers, our smallest Megaburger weighs in at 5.5 Kilos (the Roadtrain burger) and it is available every day at the gully excluding events...it feeds a minimum of 4 adults.
We have 10 different burgers over 10 kilograms..each a different shape and with different ingredients, each feed a minimum of 15 adults. The largest is 25 kilos and is over 1 meter long in the shape of a semi trailer (prime mover and trailer are seperate yet join together for presentation)...it feed 30 people minimum. All our 10 kilo plus burgers are available on a 3 day preorderand are very popular with rally groups and mega families.
In March 2010 we had our biggest recorded flood in the pubs history. Floodwater reached 4.65 metres and the floorboards of the pub. We lost all our plumbing from under the pub and all our tank water. Pub was surrounded by water yet had none on tap. We were isolated for over a month but had a lot of fun.
On 31.12.2010 (nyeve 10/11) our pub was closed by the Inspector of Police in Roma who was of the belief we were in threat of being flooded overnight. All our guests were sent home at 3pm new years eve by the police and all monies were refunded to our guests. This was a huge loss to us & our Community but to all our Workers also.The river was at 2.45 meters at 3pm on 31.12.10 (2 Sydney harbours from any danger) and 2.65 at 9am 1.1.11. A long way from any danger and quite a normal flow for the time of year.The inspector allowed us to reopen by 2pm 1.1.11 but everyone had gone home so 10/11 was a sad new year for us. Sometimes life does not make sense but we all move on to better times as we have.
Today (14.12.11) we are at 2.90 meters with no problems and noboby has even called us let alone closed our pub.
This new years will be the biggest ever at the Gully. For $50 adults (kids under 14 free) patrons get 3 huge days of entertainment, starting Friday 30.12.11 with country music band Kerry Kennedy & Double Barrel playing into the night.
New years eve we will host the legendary Rob Black and the Kelly Gang who we booked over 2 years ago to play this year.We have our late licenses approved.
At midnight on new years eve Wazza from Fireworks Downunder will light up our beautiful starlit sky with his own massive fireworks display. The largest calibre (diameter and weight) fireworks in Australia are let off every year at Nindigully. You will have to travel to Asia to see the size mortars Waza fires here at the gully.
On new years day our special gully friend and entertainer Adam Kilpatrick will sing to you from lunch time till late afternoon followed by Neil Duddy into the night.By then we hope to of worn everyone out as the 5 of us will certainly be tired.
The weekend is fully catered for your enjoyment by Doggas Bury the Bone Banquets from Thargomindah who has a talent for serving up wonderful healthy bush tucker
to as many people as we can throw at him. He will feed you from 6am till late into the night daily. Assisting him and ourselves as always are our friends,family and the people of Variety Club Qld, we love you all.
The theme for the weekend as usual is a Pool Party so bring your own pool and blow ups and set up along and in the Moonie River and enjoy the party. Bikinis and Boardshorts are encouraged . And of course RM's and Akubras are always welcome.
If anyone can find anywhere else in Australia New years eve that you can get 3 days and nights of entertainment , massive fireworks spectacular, free camping beside a beautiful river and free use of pub showers and toilets always then please call and let me know.
PLEASE help us by getting us out there into the media and your friends minds and help us make this our most successful year ever.

We do not believe that there is any specific targeting of caravans by QT. Like any vehicle which looks illegal such rigs involving caravans will be randomly pulled up however our usually reliable sources tell us that there is definitely no specific targeting program in place for caravans. We believe however that NSW Transport are pulling up caravans at the moment.
As regards the difference between weights on a VIN plate and those on a rego sticker, this can possibly happen in a couple of different ways. When a caravan is taken to a QT registration centre it is the responsibility of the inspecting officer to check that the measurements and the data on the VIN plate correspond with those noted on the completed application form. Obviously some are not properly checked and/or are incorrectly transposed onto the computer records.
The other method is where a dealer is licensed to issue registration plates. They are declaring that all detail is correct and if they are wrong then they are leaving themselves open to liability. QT regularly audit those dealers who are licensed to issue plates. So it is not likely to be done deliberately.
WEIGHING CARAVANS
The weighing of Tare Mass is quite specific. It is the weight of the caravan as it leaves the factory. It does not include water or gas. If the caravan has been factory fitted with non-standard items such as an additional gas cylinder, batteries, a rear bumper bar, an additional spare wheel, an air conditioner, a larger than standard fridge, a bigger than standard stove, an awning etc etc, then these should be included in the tare weight.
Anything fitted after it leaves the factory becomes part of the “load” regardless of whether it is fitted by the dealer or somebody else.
The normal load nominated to make up the ATM is 300kg for a single axle caravan and 400kg for a tandem. These two nominal weights are only recommendations from the RVMAA. They are not mandatory but were developed some time ago from researching what people carry on average, including the water and gas. The weight of these consumables was not “overlooked” as they are variables.
It is possible to obtain a Vehicle Modification Plate from Queensland Transport to affix to the caravan should the owner wish to increase the allowable ATM. Broadly what is required is reliable evidence that the caravan is indeed capable of carrying the extra load. A letter from the manufacturer verifying that it is engineer certified to a higher capacity will generally suffice as evidence. This would be to cover the chassis/drawbar, axles, springs, wheels, tyres, bearings and brakes etc.
The reason why manufacturers place what many would call “conservative” weights on VIN plates is because, as is suggested in the letter, some owners will look at the higher weight and still exceed it. These are the type of people who will then come back and complain about tyre failure or chassis cracking or the like. It’s the old story of 95% of good people having to suffer for the actions of 5% irresponsible ones.
It is not a correct assumption that you can compare caravans with trailers towed by a prime mover. They are treated entirely differently in the Australian Design Rules where caravans come under the category of “Pig Trailer”.
Whilst we do not wish to sound in any way defensive of manufacturers who put incorrect information on VIN plates, in the majority of the relatively few cases brought to our attention, the mistake has been involuntary human error. Manufacturers do in fact leave themselves open to very serious liability and retribution should they fit incorrect data.
All major manufacturers have scales installed at the end of their production line. Those who don’t are required to weigh them by other means and keep records of same.
What we can say with a great degree of confidence is that the majority of overweight caravans are because of retro fitted items, be they at a dealer level or subsequent to delivery and this becomes especially prevalent when consumers purchase second hand caravans and add even more on to units which already have non-calculated retro fitments.
Quite often people will purchase a caravan which is already in a manufacturer’s production schedule which then necessitates the retro-fitting of certain items by the dealer. When ordering a new caravan, consumers should probably check whether what they order is in this category and if so, request the dealer to request that the manufacturer fits a VIN plate with a higher capacity ATM ex factory to save any future problems.

My letter to the Tasmanian Minister concerned is below that. Please action as we would hate to lose Tassie as a destination because of Goverment bungling inspired by a few caravan parks having negative input.
Hi All,
As you are hopefully aware we have a serious problem in Tasmania in regards to budget camping. The Regulator acting on the complaints of 4 caravan park owners is trying to make all budget camps and council controlled free or low cost sites charge the same fee as caravan parks.
We must treat this as serious as it could become a virus if passed and in time spread to the mainland. There is a submission paper put out by the Government in regards to this which is due to be viewed on Dec 6th. Time is to short for the NACC to go through this submission and state our case in regards to this problem.
But what we can do is to get members of our local and state clubs write a letter of concern stating item such as the high cost of the ferry means that for RV travelers on fixed incomes have to be able to stay in budget camp areas if they so wish so as they can afford to travel around Tassie.There will be many other points that I,m sure that folk will be able to use.

MY LETTER TO THE MINISTER.
To The Hon Bryan Green mp deputy Premier of Tasmania
Dear sir.
It is with great concern that I write to you with regard to the proposed fees to be imposed on budget/free camps in Tasmania.
My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting your great State earlier this year. We spent two months touring and camping in our self contained caravan.
We enjoyed the experience so much that we made the decision to return in November 2012 and stay for 6-7 months to explore the Island properly.
We found that the majority of towns in Tassie were most friendly and those without caravan parks provided wonderful free camp areas.
In towns supplying this free camp service we always make a point of rewarding the community by supporting the local businesses by the purchase of fuel and the necessities of life.
A negative experience on our trip resulted in wide spread publicity.
We arrived at Wynyard to a free camp in the show ground. Posted as a free camp in the Camps 6 booklet which is used by most travellers these days.
We were most distressed to find a sign on the gate forbidding caravans to camp in this spot, motor homes only. Please see attached blog post.
This cut short our stay in the area and we carried our need for fuel top up and re stock of the pantry and beverage supplies on to our next stop.
We had several friends comeing over on the boat a few days after us so as you do we phoned them to tell them to bypass Wynyard explaining why.
This bad publicity expanded to our travel blog, which is written by us and enjoyed by many like minded travellers.

Again this bad publicity extended even further to our caravan club members and friends in other clubs.
We would be most distressed to see Tasmania ignored as a caravan/ motorhome/ camper destination by owners of these means of mobile accommodation.
The impost of the ocean trip to Tasmania is a heavy burden in itself for most low budget travellers as a lot of retirees are.
As low budget travellers we still have to eat and use fuel for our travels. I am sure that our contribution to the Tasmanian economy is not insubstantial.
We urge you most strongly to retain the great atmosphere and experience that comes from visiting Tasmania for all to share.
