  1. I am not keen on rolling out of bed or having the fridge door swing shut or wide open and bang on the protruding section of wall just behind it in out van, so we do use ramps ... If needed. We either back on or drive on depending on the situation. As the one between the wheels is a wee bit long, years ago we trimmed the front off it (back a couple of inches). I cant recall what brand ours are, but they are really solid and not the 'stepped' ones that I think are the Fiamma brand. They are still yellow and are just shaped like a wedge. They came with small matching chocks that interlock with the notches in the 'ramps'. We also have two black solid rubber chocks bought from Super Cheap.

We do use our wind down legs, I also an not keen on the 'seasick' feeling. We do not however use the handbrake. Particularly when parked up for long periods. Had the experience a few years ago where we stayed in the same place for 3 months with the handbrake on, didn't realise that when we released it, it did not release on one wheel, and as we drove away it ripped the brake lining off and broke it into two pieces. Wondered why the van seemed to brake a little differently, it does not work well when there are two pieces of your brake lining rolling round in the bottom. Lucky we only went from FN Queensland to Hervey Bay where we did a service on the wheels/bearings and the problem was found. I think this could be more a problem in hot and humid areas, but we just don't do it any more.

This is not offered as an absolute on what to do. Just our thoughts and what we do.

  2. Hi,

Just wondering about the fridge plug in the cupboard?? I would prefer to switch my fridge off, some other way than the thermostat, if I can. I have had a look in the cupboard, but can't see any obvious plug to the fridge. You wouldn't have a photo would you?? I have an XC2, 2006 model, so maybe it doesn't have one!!

    Thanks

    Jeff

Our van is 2003 XC - Has been my experience that things are set up a lot differently in a lot of vans though.

Hope this is of some value to you.

  3. Turn the switch harder. Does the light go off. We took some time to work it out. We have a coolmatic in a 2002 XC. Cheers Rod and Judy.

No the light does not go out.. it does not turn off. Learned this years ago. No sweat though.. not hard to open the cupboard and remove the plug.

  4. I have seen this subject before and I don`t understand the issue with not turning of the fridge via the thermostat switch!! We have had our current van for nearly 4 years and have always turned of at the switch for defrosting and with no problems. It actually has an off position on the switch.

Because when we turn the thermostat right to the bottom it does not turn our fridge off....

Our Vitro is nearly 9 years old.. maybe the new ones are different...

  5. Hi Leno and Denise

I read with interest your comment below. Can you tell me a little bit about what they showed you?

I had a look at the iphone at telstra today and they showed me the connections for the aerial in the van and how it can be connected to the car.

  6. The problem is that the iPhone does not have a port to put the piggy into.. there simply is not the ability to do it so I have been told twice by different retailers.

Any yes Matt is brilliant. I have been getting connections sent to me for new phones since 2004. Never had any problems, always get exactly what I need.

    Hi Leno & Denise,

May I suggest a phone call to WINCOM Australia. These guys seem to know there way around the traps.

The IT Manager is Mathew Colgrave Mobile # 0411704391 (office) 07 32057999

    There location is Brendale QLD.

They set us up with 'pigtails & extension cable' for my old technology mobile phone. I now utilise my Marine Antenna on the ATV.

Hopefully they can do the same for all you guys.

    Safe travels

    Gary & Kaye

  7. As I am really in need of a new phone, I am watching this topic with great interest.

I was all set to buy an iPhone, then found out I could not use it with the aerial in our car or van.

I am now at a loss as to what to get.

EDIT: we do of course use Telstra for phone and internet.. love them or hate them, they still have the better coverage.

  8. Sounds great Russ and Sue. We look forward to it..

Thanks all others for great tips on places to stay... I have made many notes.

Eric and Jodie, like you, we have no firm plans but will PM you when we get down that way and keep in touch that way. We've got about seven weeks to do what we want to do, so we should be able to wangle a quick hello somewhere.

    Cheers

    Russ

  9. We will be down that way somewhere, but we are not sure where.

At this stage we are planning to leave Brisbane early in January and arrive down that way sometime in January. We have no fixed plans of where we are going to go, but we want to catch some crabs.

    Maybe we will cross paths.

  10. It is an amazing question, isn't. So many people like this or that for so many reasons.

    For me?

I LOVE the idea of the full ensuite, and had I never had this van I probably would have gone that way. However as I sit here looking at the end of my van, looking at the cupboard space and bench space I would lose, and I wonder.

If I get a van with a combined, I would lose the window, the bench and lots of cupboards, not to mention that I love my TV where it is and it would not be possible with an ensuite. I am not a fan of TV's on arms, I never understand how you would attach your VAST box to your TV that way? Put it on the bench underneath it? I know the ensuite has cupboards, but when I consider what is in the cupboards that I am going to lose. .. its not stuff I want to put into a bathroom. I don't want to go to the bathroom to get tin food, chargers, plastic cooking stuff or glad wrap. Where would I put this stuff, its not that the rest of my cupboards are empty and waiting for it. And.. the cupboards in the ensuite would never never be the same volume (can you say that), as what I currently have. If Kedron put the washing machines into the bathrooms it would be a bit better, but they don't seem to. There is also the fact that with an ensuite, from what I have seen, you get a toilet with a smaller cassette and it draws from your main tanks so you have less water available for other things.

I would however, make the next combined 400mm wider and 400 mm longer to give a little more elbow room. Lose the useless drop down basin that the water has never ever wanted to go down the tiny little tube called a drain, and put in a corner or long narrow basin under the shower.

We do live in our van and have for about 8 years now while travelling.

But as I said in the beginning of this missive, its horses for courses and everyone has their own opinion of what suits them best.

  11. Barry so glad it was easy for you... It just seemed a lot worse than it was when we had been there on previous occasions.. Maybe the worst was further up the track from Eddies place. Opposite direction to the colored sands, it was not till after we drove out that we started thinking about it...

It is a lovely place.. and yes we should have stopped outside Eddies house rather than drive in and park.. we were walking back to see him when he came speeding down to tell us to move off.

It is a lovely place for sure and the colored sands are just great to see.

  12. LOL.. Oh so sorry Rod... We could save you a piece or two? or maybe some of the next on ROFL.

See that's what you can catch up here at Wonga Beach. Just a tiddler.

No ... not the Hobie.. actually the Hobie is not going to get another run for sometime. We are going down to SA in January then up the middle to Daly, over to Burketown and back here for 1 August. Will be boat trip, Yertle will have to stay sleeping in storage.

  13. Hi Colin

Twelve months ago I would have agreed with you.

However last week it was not so good. The track was much more overgrown. There are a lot of large holes full of water and there is a tree over the track before Eddies place with a very sharp turn around it.. The tree must have fallen and no one has moved it.. just driven their cars around it. The big sandy hill as you descend to the beach is no longer even sandy, its now a hard narrow track, washed out into a rut on the side. Had I not seen it one year apart with my own eyes, I would not have believed it had someone told me there was even a big soft sandy hill to drive up and down.

We met the two vans I spoke above going in, and in hindsight I feel guilty that we did not recommend that they take one tow vehicle off and do a run in before taking the vans in. I hope they did make it safely.

I am just being curious. Seems I am not destined to find out though LOL.

  14. If the Kedron who was with the Boroma ... coming down to Elim Beach on Friday 19 August. or someone who had had contact with them reads this.

We would love to find out how you went getting in to Eddies Camp there at Elim Beach.

We met the Kedron and Boroma (with a flat on the tow vehicle) on their way in. We had been there (no van), and had our warm? (I think not), welcome from Eddie and we were leaving the area.

A word of advice.. NEVER drive by Eddies house and park.. I have never seen an old person move so fast to get tell us to move on (polite version) .. It seems we were in the way of the campers who were coming. I can only imaging he meant the above vans. As we so on one else near there till be met those a couple of hours later. What a cranky old XXXXX. One of our party suggested he must have a toothache. Which made us all laugh as I dont think he has a tooth in his head. He would not let us speak, could not really get a word in .. was trying to tell him we only wanted to look at the beach.. I guess the other 'non camper" there must have stopped at the house and got permission to go the extra 30 metres before parking.

Unfortunately it has soured a place I had such fond memories of...
