Matting

Hello to all KOG members,

Have been reading with interest comments about different ground matting.

We were told recently that some caravan parks will only allow you to use environmentally friendly mats that allow the grass to grow and not die under the mat.

We don't often stay in caravan parks preferring the isolated places,hence the purchase of TE, but thought we would ask if anyone knows this to be correct.

Stan phoned me on Monday to say our chassis has arrived,they will start our van soon, June o7 (ordering date),was a long time ago.

Yes, that's right about the matting in caravan parks, although so far I haven't seen any parks actually policing it. We use a common sense approach in any case, carrying both shade cloth for sandy ground, and the "proper" stuff for grass (caravan park or not). And the latter certainly works - where we've stayed in one grassy spot more than a few days, the grass happily starts growing through it! So what's the point using it at all - why not just use nothing and enjoy the grass? In fact that's often what we do, but otherwise, it's sometimes nicer to have fabric underfoot than bare ground, especially if the grass is less than full-cover, while not leaving a dead patch for the next poor campers that follow us. If too much grass starts coming through, you just lift the matting and re-lay it now and then.

Hi Graham & Sue,

We use an Annex Floor Matting put out by the Camec group. Comes in different sizes and colours and allows sand and fluids to pass through it. It is not cheap though and a bit heavier than say shadecloth. Some swear by shadecloth but we found it a bit slippery. There is another product Enduromat Mate but haven't actually seen it. Maybe do a google search as well and see what comes up.

Hi there Graham and Sue

We carry 2 types of matting in our ATV for two. One is the matting from Camac for grassy sites, the other a thin rubberised stye to use on concrete slabs. Both work well in their respective environments. We used shade cloth way back when we had a camper trailor but GAVE it away because it was very slippery/ danderous when wet!!!!!

Yeah that's right, people like Camec can tell you what is "approved" and what's not, but it's really just anything with a fairly course open weave that will allow grass to grow through.
