Access to Cape York

G'day

We have a new 2009 22' TE, & we're taking it to Cape York in May/June this year for its 1st big trip. It's being towed by a VW Touareg 3.0 TDI which to date has proven to be an excellent tow vehicle even with the TE fully loaded.

The Touareg can handle 0.5m water without a snorkel & we're being told this should be ok if we use the main roads. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

We would also like to get into Chili Beach, & this should be ok, but we're concerned about the tightness of the corners as you get closer to Chili Beach, due to the wide arc the TE has. Does anyone have experience getting into Chili Beach with a TopEnder?

What about access to Captain Billy Landing?

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Alan

Hi Alan & Jayne, We did the cape last year and left the van at Bramwell Junction, Chilli Beach might be okay. Captain Billy Landing our opinion for what it is worth terrible. We took about 1 hour to do 7 Kms did not go all the way in. Would not attempt to take a van in as road was very narrow and winding with lots of overgrowth and corrigations. Regards Chris Carter

G'day Chris

Thanks for your reply. It's much appreciated.

We were also wondering about Captain Billy Landing, but I think you have removed that idea for us.

Is there any reason why you didn't take your van past Bramwell Junction? Do you think north of this would be ok for a TE?

Cheers

Alan

Hi Alan & Jayne, The reason for not taking the Van any further than Bramwell Junction was because we wanted to go into Captain Billy Landing (which we did not get to), Fruitbat Falls and Twin Falls where the road is very narrow, big dips and not too many places to camp and had planned to do part of the Old Telegraph Track but as we had a problem with the third battery breaking its mount in Cruiser and travelling on our own we thought discretion was the better part of valor. When we left Brisbane in June we did not plan on going to the Cape but only as far as Hopevale to Edie's camp, we were told the road to the Cape was like a four lane highway so we continued on and booked into Seisa into a donga for 3 nights. Enjoyed the trip though.
