Plenty Highway Condition

Recommended Posts

Hi

Sharon and I are about to head off on an 8 week trip to the Northern Territory only leaving on the 8th May 2012 travelling firstly from Hervey Bay to Alice Springs. We are contemplating going through Boulia and then across the Plenty Highway, just wondering if anyone has travelled this way recently and has any relevant information(fuel, road conditions etc.)that might help us decide if we should do this.

many thanks and happy travels

Michael,

the following link will be useful in helping to plan the trip.

You will note there is a section of the Plenty which has high clearance status - which would be OK for a Kedron, of course.

A bit later than you (a week or so later) we may be doing the same trip in reverse. Or we may go up to Quilpie etc via the Stretzlecki Track.

Hi Michael

It has been a couple of years since we did the Plenty, so this probably won't be a great help but....

The Plenty is the only road that has ever caused damage to our Top Ender. One of the kitchen drawer latches broke and the drawer then bounced around the van until we stopped and checked things. So, the Plenty certainly had its moments back then and I suspect it still does. Just follow the usual advice and air-down your tyres and drive slowly. We realise now that we didn't stop often enough to check for damage and we do that a lot more often when on crappy roads.

Cheers

Russ

Hi Michael,

We did the Plenty & Donohue hwy in 2008 & had no problems & we have never let our tyres down on any of the dirt roads incl the Gibb River & around the bottom of the Gulf & have never broken anything. You will enjoy it . Neville

Hi All

We have just travelled the Plenty Highway - as have anoher 3 Kedrons that we caught up with on the way.

The road condition was pretty good (based on our expectations) some 30 or so Km of relatively minor corrugated and bull dust segments - but overall pretty good. Jervios Station and GemTree were good campsotes on teh way across.
