Hi Everyone

Lynda and and I are currently planning our next 'big' trip for winter next year and one possible route is to travel west from Boulia to Alice Springs via the Donohue/Plenty Hwys.

:helpsmilie: Has any KOG member under taken this trip in recent years and if so, how did you find the conditions, fuel supply, number of days to complete the route etc

At this stage we would be travelling alone and would be pulling our 20'6 ATV (tare 2850kg) with, figures crossed, a near new 200 series diesel.

Looking forward to reading some helpful info.

kind regards,

Alan n Lynda

Hi Alan n Linda,

We travelled across the Plenty in June '07 and apart from a small stretch on the Eastern end where the wheel tracks were a little deep and required clearence, the road was suitable for sedans. Providing it has not seen recent rain when u travel there should not be any issues.

As for fuel, I believe that Tobermorey is now closed on the border so the next fuel would be Jervios, a little over 400km West of Boulia. Time, well as a guide, we were a little rushed to get back to Brissy and done Alice to Boulia in a day fairly comfortable towing a Builders trailer and the ute loaded up with the race bike etc.

Hope this helps

Hi Alan & Lynda

As Kimbo mentioned we did it last year late May or Early June , we left alice and stayed to Tobermorey on the first day and then Tobermorey to Boulia the 2nd day. Tobermorey is now closed for fuel & camping which is a shame.

Gem tree at the alice end is a nice spot and we would plan on staying there for a couple of nights next time.

Road conditions were good and could sit on 80 km/hr comfortably had to overtake a Pheonix and Kimberley Camper who going way to slow for us. No damage to van or car and I was running 25 psi in the van tyres.

Friends of ours went over the plenty approx 3-4 weeks after us and the corros broke their Dometic A/C - It was a Bushtracker though

The Plenty was a lot better than the Tanami.

Funny thing was we had a heap of bikes on trailers and utes coming the opposite way.

Darryl,

was the trip worth doing from an "interesting trip" perspective? Would you do it again?

Hi Chris

We used it as a short cut from Alice to Brisbane so it was worth it in that regard - the big termite mound was about the only thing of interest for us but as we weren't looking to smell the roses we didn't.

I'd certainly go over it again if going from Brisb to Alice etc as it's certainly more interesting than the longer bitumen run up to Isa, 3 ways etc.

Cheers

Hi Alan n Lynda

We did the Plenty June this year, Alice to Boulia towing previous van. No problems, tyre pressures down etc and drive to conditions.

We had to wait several days before travel due to heavy rains and found that the bull dust sections were better/easier to spot due to still being damp.

We did a couple of days at Gem Tree and two nights out along the road. I found the country interesting enough and would do it again.

Fuel still available at Jervois (cash only) and Gem Tree.

Cheers
