Glen and Debbie
Hi Glen & I are heading off to Carnarvon Gorge if anyone would like to join us. Have booked a powered site at Takaru Campground 10th - 15th June. CheersDeb B
Chris
Hi Deb.I absolutely loved Carnarvon Gorge, and took many lovely photos there. Be aware (if you haven't been there before) that some of the camping sites are in the middle of a dusty, busy area. Like parking in a car park at Woolies, just not as comfortable as Woolies! Ring ahead and ask Takarakka for one of the sites around the edge of the campground, so you back onto foliage, and are out of the way of dust-rising traffic.Chris
Glen and Debbie
Thanks Chris - will definitely keep that in mind. Last time we stayed at the campground right in the national park at the start of the walks.CheersDeb B
cvtripper
Hi Glen & Deb,We visited Carnarvon Gorge last July.Stayed at Warremba Farm Stay, but they appear to be closed now, which is a pity. They had a great camp kitchen and were only about $16, compared to Takarakka at $35.Takarakka was really busy and many complained it was a dust bowl, but we had a drive through the park and even though it was busy, we noticed there were quite a few grassy sites, so if you can get one of those that'd be good. They have a large camp kitchen area to catch up with other travellers.http://www.takaru.com.au/takaru/index.cfm?...p;pageID=8&We were there after the floods last year - not sure what it's like this year or if they copped the floods.http://photos.bellette.net/content.asp?pho...rnarvon%20GorgeYou'll have a great time.We challenged you to do the "big" walk that we were challenged to last year by the retirees - "you guys are young, you can do the bigger walk than us"... Only 22kms, but pretty flat. But get an early start - took us 7 hours return including the side tracks - walk to the end then back talking the side tracks along the way.A bit off topic:We also visited Undara Lava Tubes which was worthwhile but a bit further north (if you're going anywhere near Cairns). There was something on the news last week that the tubes are flooded at the moment with crystal clear water due to the floods this year. They are expected to stay like this for the rest of the year. We're thinking about calling in on our way this year.http://undara.com.au/http://photos.bellette.net/content.asp?pho...%20Lava%20TubesForgot to add:Park map is at http://undara.com.au/getting-here/maps/We were on site 19 or 20. They were quiet and all sites at that end a drive through.
Glen and Debbie
HiThanks for the vote of confidence in our fitness:)We went there a few years back - it was the last year they had the campground at the start of the walks open. There were approx 20 of us including young children and on our first day, we all did the 22k walk. The only problem Glen & I had was our footwear - I had a faithful pair of joggers and Glen had redback work boots - at the end of the day, once we took our shoes off - we had difficulty getting them back on due to very nasty blisters - had to bust the one on my little toe to even consider getting my foot back in the shoe. As soon as we got to the creek near the campground we took off our shoes and just let them go numb in the very refreshing water and really wanted to just spend the next few days with my feet in the creek:) We continued to walk each day - very slowly - and got to do most, but not all. So we plan to do it all again and hopefully take in the walks we missed out on - and will let you know how it goes - is there a prize for doing the whole walk again - maybe share some port at the next campfire. We also now have very worn in and very suitable hiking boots and since a bit older - hiking sticks:) I am also being a woosy and have booked a powered site to plug in the electric heater - might even consider an electric blanket:)Chris also mentioned the dust, so I will keep it in mind and hopefully we can pick our spot when we get there. We went to Undara last year - actually enjoyed Cobbold Gorge more, but that is further again.CheersDeb & Glen

gunna
By sheer coincidence, I have just spent the last hour googling everything about Carnarvon - with the idea of going sometime in June !! I will be going to State of Origin on the 11th. Might head up on the 12th so we might catch up the last day or so of your stay. Don't suppose you want to change your booking by a couple days ?Peter
